SOLID WOVEN BELT (PVC/PVG) (PVC/PVG)

Definition

A solid woven belt has a single-piece woven synthetic carcass fully impregnated with PVC or PVG, giving flame retardant, anti-static behaviour mandatory in many underground coal mines.

A solid woven belt replaces the multi-ply layered carcass of a conventional fabric belt with a single thick fabric woven in one piece — warp, weft and binder yarns interlocked through the full belt thickness. The fabric is then fully impregnated with PVC (polyvinyl chloride) or with PVC + a thin nitrile-rubber cover layer designated PVG. The resulting belt has no inter-ply interface to delaminate, excellent tear and impact resistance, very low elongation, and inherent flame-retardant and anti-static properties from the PVC matrix.

Belts are designated by their longitudinal breaking strength in the format 680S, 800S, 1000S, 1250S, 1400S, 1600S, 1800S, 2000S, 2500S (N/mm). Common belt widths run 800–1400 mm. Because the carcass is fire-resistant by construction rather than by surface coating, solid woven belts are mandatory or strongly preferred in underground coal mines worldwide — MSHA in the United States, AS 1332 in Australia and EN 14973 in Europe all specify solid woven for the most stringent fire-safety categories. Some surface installations (grain elevators, paper mills, biomass handling) also use solid woven for the same fire-safety reason.

Field maintenance differs from rubber belts. Splices are made cold using mechanical fasteners or hot using a special PVC vulcanization recipe; splice strength reaches 60–70 % of belt strength. The PVC cover is more sensitive to oils and aromatic solvents than NR/SBR rubber, so cargo screening matters — a common belt-failure mode is solvent attack on the cover, not mechanical wear.
