The anatomy of a belt conveyor
Every belt conveyor is the same handful of parts arranged around one loop of belt: pulleys to turn and drive it, idlers to support it, a take-up to tension it, and guarding at the loading and discharge points. This diagram labels the twelve that matter, says what each one does, and links to the ones we make. Use it to name a part you are trying to source, or to understand where a problem on your conveyor is coming from.

Conveyor belt
The moving carrying surface — a rubber-covered fabric or steel-cord carcass that both carries the load and transmits the pull. Everything else exists to support, tension and turn it.

Drive (head) pulley
The powered pulley, usually at the discharge end, that drives the belt through friction. Lagging on its face raises the friction so it can transmit torque without slip.

Tail pulley
The pulley at the loading end that redirects the belt back along the return run. It runs un-powered and is often the take-up or a plain bend pulley.

Snub pulley
A small pulley set close to the drive pulley to increase the belt's wrap angle around it. More wrap means more friction grip, so the drive can pull harder before the belt slips.

Take-up (tensioning)
Applies and maintains belt tension, taking up the slack from stretch and thermal movement. Gravity (a weighted pulley) or screw types keep the belt tight enough to grip the drive.

Carrying (troughing) idlers
The rollers under the loaded top strand, usually a three-roll trough set, that support the belt and shape it into a trough so it holds more material.

Return idlers
The rollers under the empty bottom strand that support the belt on its way back to the tail. Flat or V-return, sometimes rubber-disc to shed carryback.

Impact idlers
Rubber-cushioned rollers fitted under the loading point to absorb the shock of falling material and protect the belt and splice from impact damage.

Self-aligning (training) idlers
Idlers that pivot to steer a wandering belt back to centre, correcting mistracking before the belt edge is damaged or spillage starts.

Drive unit (motor & gearbox)
The motor, gearbox and coupling that turn the drive pulley. Sized from the belt's total resistance; on shorter units a motorised drum integrates the lot inside the pulley.

Loading skirtboard & chute
The chute and rubber-sealed side boards at the loading point that centre the material onto the belt and contain it until it settles, cutting spillage and dust.

Belt cleaner (scraper)
Blades held against the belt face after the discharge pulley to strip off material that would otherwise stick to the belt (carryback) and foul the return idlers.
Conveyor parts — common questions
What are the main parts of a belt conveyor?
A belt conveyor is built from the belt itself, the pulleys (a driven head pulley plus tail, snub and bend pulleys that turn and route the belt), the idlers (carrying, return, impact and self-aligning rollers that support it), a take-up that tensions it, a drive unit that powers the head pulley, and guarding at the loading and discharge points — skirtboards and a belt cleaner.
What is the difference between a snub pulley and a bend pulley?
Both are un-powered pulleys that route the belt, but a snub pulley sits close to the drive pulley specifically to increase the belt's wrap angle around the drive, improving grip. A bend pulley simply changes the belt's direction of travel elsewhere in the circuit, typically at the take-up.
Why are impact idlers only under the loading point?
Impact idlers have rubber-cushioned rings that absorb the energy of material falling onto the belt. That shock only occurs where material is loaded, so the cushioned rollers are concentrated there; elsewhere plain carrying idlers are enough and cost less.
What does the take-up do on a conveyor?
The take-up applies and holds the belt tension. A belt stretches under load and with temperature, and the drive pulley needs a minimum tension to grip without slipping. A gravity take-up (a weighted pulley) or a screw take-up removes the slack automatically or by adjustment.
